Friday, I had the privilege of working with a men’s volleyball program. One of the areas of focus (their words) was the idea of commitment.
Throughout my coaching and teaching career, I’ve always believed in the power of connection—not just connection among people, but connection across all facets of life. The more connection points I can make to a topic, the more likely it is to stick.

It’s easy to be committed early in the season—when you’re excited, energized, and focused. But can you stay committed to the process late in the season when you’re tired, beat up, and emotionally drained?
It’s easy to be committed on January 3rd. But can you wake up early and get to the gym long after that initial excitement has faded and life gets busy?
It’s easy to be committed to getting great grades when the marking period starts. But can you stay committed when you have to study for a test and your friends are heading to the movies?
It’s easy to be committed in your relationships when everything is going great. But can you stay committed when hard conversations need to happen and things get tough?
It’s easy to be committed to your recovery when life feels good. But can you stay committed when temptation hits or circumstances aren’t ideal?
Commitment is one of the biggest indicators of consistent success.
Without it, you won’t finish much, you won’t persevere through much, and you won’t achieve much.
Stay committed.

“Just take the Next Step.”
Sometimes the greatest wisdom can be found in the simplest messages.
The easiest way I help young adults (and maybe old) understand where their feet are is to talk about this children’s book. In “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” The boy and the horse get lost in the woods. The fog and forest are just too dense for the boy to see where he needs to go to get out of the woods. Then the horse drops liquid gold. “Can you see the next step?”
“Just take that one.”
Sometimes we get so wrapped up talking about goal setting and future plans, but we forget that all we have to do is take that next step, then the next one, and then another. For a lot of our youth these big long term plans sound great in theory, but the next steps (the process) is where the real growth happens.
Lets keep it simple, take that next step and Win the Day.
